Remembrance Service - Cenotaph London 2018
The HMS Illustrious Association marched at the Cenotaph at Whitehall in London again on the 11th November 2018 and this is was our 3rd year of attending this event.
As most of you will no doubt know, this years' service, marked 100 years since the end of World War 1
Many of our members stayed in London on the Saturday and met in the afternoon to watch the Rugby - England v New Zealand in the Albert Pub on Victoria Street, (England unfortunately lost, but it was a close game), and after the game, we all met at the Coal Hole Pub on the Strand at about 1900. For many of those that gathered, this was their first time that to have experienced an Association event, and based upon their feedback on Social Media, it was reported that it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Once again Members who attended were from all eras and from all parts of the country and again, spporting us for the 2nd year in a row, we even had members, namely Jon Seabron & Jack Read who are Ex-US Marines and met some of the Lusty crew back in 1986, travel all the way over from California to join us. We also had the pleasure of the Company of one of our Senior members, namely Harold Binney, who served in Illustrious 4 in 1948 and we were immensely proud that he could take part in the parade with us.
We arranged to meet at 0915 at Admiralty Arch we met at and despite the forecast of rain, we were fortunate enough, the Sun Gods were in our favour as the rain clouds were visible all around us, and 45 of our members assembled on Horseguards Parade in what was mostly pleasant sunshine.
In what was again a both moving and most memorable occasion, we proudly marched down Whitehall, (mostly in step) to cheering crowds, and the salute was taken by the Princess Royal
At the request of our members, it is our intention to march at the cenotaph again in 2019
We hope that you can join us.
